The UK’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Innovate UK Global Alliance Africa and the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) are offering up to eight fully funded places to participate in their Biosciences Innovation Cluster NextGen Initiative - a unique opportunity for early career researchers to work with UK universities and partners to develop their own scientific research into commercial ventures, as well as to play a key role in the development of a new bioscience cluster driven approach to innovation in Kenya.
The objective of the NextGen initiative is to identify and incubate outstanding early career researchers/innovators with strong potential for science-led ventures in any scientific discipline (life sciences, natural sciences & engineering sciences). The programme will consist of a knowledge exchange visit to the UK from 1-6 June 2025, followed by the launch of an incubator initiative that will provide ongoing technical expertise and support to the selected researchers/innovators.
Are you an early career researcher or innovator working in any scientific discipline (life sciences, natural sciences & engineering sciences) who is interested in developing a science-led venture? Do you meet the eligibility criteria below? If so, please submit your application before 30 April 2025.
- Have completed a PhD in relevant subject areas/disciplines. Confirmation of award of the PhD will be required.
- Have no more than seven years of active full time postdoctoral experience at the time of application (including teaching experience and/or time spent in industry, excluding career breaks for maternity/childcare reasons).
- Be working in Kenya
- Hold Kenyan citizenship and a valid passport
- Have a track record of minimum 3 relevant publications in peer-reviewed high-quality journals
- Be actively engaged in relevant research whether through academia or industry
The knowledge exchange visit will cover the cost of visa, flights, accommodation and meals in the UK. No allowance/per diem/stipend will be provided. The deadline for submitting your application is midnight on Wednesday, 30 April 2025. Shortlisted applicants will be notified by Friday, 2 May 2025 and online interviews will be conducted on Monday, 5 May 2025. Further details will be provided to shortlisted applicants.
