Hello Reclone Community ![]()
You’re all invited to our Community Meeting next week, on 2025-11-19T14:00:00Z. We will hear from Cholpisit Ice Kiattisewee (MIT, USA), presenting about Translating Laboratory Experience to Accessible Education.
Join us via Zoom: Launch Meeting - Zoom
In this talk, Ice will discuss his experience in advancing CRISPR gene regulation research and his path on applying this knowledge gain for accessible education. In the first half, Ice will discuss CRISPR gene regulation technology in bacteria, his expertise built during his PhD. The CRISPR gene activation (CRISPRa) is well established in eukaryotic systems with various works reporting synergistic gene activation by combining different systems together. Attempting to acquire synergistic gene activation in a synthetic manner in bacteria, we faced several challenges that forced us to form a systematic testbed, underscoring a key principle of synthetic biology. Unexpectedly, activator combinations often led to antagonism rather than synergy, revealing key mechanistic differences between bacterial and eukaryotic transcriptional activation.
In the second half, Ice will share ongoing effort in education, especiall on his collaboration with SynBio4ALL Africa, now registered as a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing SynBio education across Africa. Both in Thailand and Africa, Ice established virtual courses to train hundreds of participants from multiple educational levels and expertise. Our recent 2025 Plant Synthetic Biology course, supported by the Experiment Foundation, emphasizes sustainable agriculture and native plant genomics. Finally, Ice will reflect how these efforts on how to advance engineering biology research globally can empower new generations in his own direction.
