This is an open and informal working together session. Feel free to drop in/out of the session as it suits you. See the first post in this topic for the joining details.
Aim: The plan for the session is to compile together all the links and documentation associated with each of the Open DNA Collections, so that we have a central location where you can find all the necessary details to support your use of these reagents.
Should you wish to let us know that you Have/Use/Contributor to the Collections, please also look at the “ODC_Contributors” sheet and fill in your details.
(A future task is to combine this with known users on the FreeGenes Bionet so that we have a comprehensive list and map of members that we can reach out to with troubleshooting issues with the Collections.)

And I’m glad to see that folks embraced the informal drop in/out approach and some had enough time to stay with us for a little while and help work on the task at hand!
We had a productive session and managed to make some headway in filling in details about the Open DNA Collections. Hopefully, this will become a familiar resource for all Collection users as a central location for you to find all information about these reagents.

We also had some interesting side discussions whilst we were working, but the key highlights are as follows:
Reclone Reagent Distribution Hubs - @MoiRelles and @Kingstone were discussing and hearing about our current plans about the Hubs, and made us realise that we should be providing more information about the Hubs, how they work, what Collections they (will) hold and, most importantly, how people can request the reagents for themselves.
In recent months, we’ve also had a few people/groups show interest in becoming a Hub, we’d love to welcome you soon, but we want to first ensure that our three current Hubs in Argentina, Ghana, and Philippines are up and running first before expanding.
Stay tuned though, and we’ll get back to you as soon as we’ve got the capacity to grow. We’re optimistic about returning to this in mid-late 2024.
Raising Issues about the Collections - @fxbuson and I have been bouncing ideas about how to make it easier for folks to standardise raising issues with parts within the collections, and we’ll be setting up a template on Reclone.org · GitHub for this in due course. We’ll also put an explanation on the Forum (link) so that those less familiar with GitHub can also contribute. We have plans also to introduce people to GitHub to try streamline how we process these issues.
Eszter popped by briefly and raised a couple issues that she saw on the backend database from the FreeGenes Collections, so again highlighting the need to ensure our documentation is correct and up-to-date!
This may form another Open Working Session for the future, so do follow the discussions on how you can help with this.
Use Cases of the Collections - Eszter also asked about who uses the different Collections, and where she might find more information about this.
Specifically, she was wondering who uses the Open Reporters Collection and what for. So help her out by adding in your comments below!
We thought about what she asked, and will be looking at doing a case study on this in the future… we welcome contributors to work on this with us!
Given the variety of topics that came up during this first Open Working Session, we’ll definitely have enough ideas for what to work on for the next few sessions! Though we always welcome new ideas.
